Yes, brand is everything. Recently, a senior-level Director of PR & Marketing at a college in a southern state told me he believed his campus did not have a brand problem. However, according to his college web site data:

*  The Graduation rate over five years was only 11 percent.

*   Fund raising totals were down more than 60-percent over five years.

*  Less than 50-percent of each first-time freshman class members were still enrolled two years after they started. What are your stats?

The statistics clearly indicate how serious work must be done on branding. What is the one thing you are best known for? Let’s work together on the answers!

Who is the PR Doctor?  My name is Michael Marshall Brown. My legacy of service to higher education and companies has been rewarded with 18 distinctive state and national awards for excellence.  These honors recognized my radar-like, strategic and blink instincts for analysis and creative problem-solving.

*  At Dutchess Community College in New York, I created an integrated marketing program featuring cable TV messages and proactive media coverage.  Head count increased from 5,500 to 7,700 students in three years. Fund raising jumped, too!

As an independent consultant in the NYC Metro region, I served politicians, Mercedes-Benz, a national conservation organization, Country Music Radio stations, Dairy Queen, a struggling advertising agency and other clients with innovative and creative solutions.

*  At Marietta College in Ohio, with the campus in dire shape, my creative work turned around sagging brand issues with new publications, a national event series, crisis media support on delicate matters, and gained proactive media coverage.

PR Doctor’s experience and instincts gained in NY and Ohio:

* As State Director of Communications for the Board of Regents that leads all public and private colleges and universities in Ohio, created new web site and a statewide video featuring John Glenn, and the first statewide marketing campaign to change the mindset about higher education.

*  At Northwest State Community College in rural Ohio, hired by Dr. Betty Young to lead the creation of a new and innovative PR & Marketing program.  Highlight was the 2005 Lessons for Leno Tour in partnership with community college presidents and PR pros.  This campaign earned unprecedented national media coverage. It energized the advocacy movement nationally, in addition to winning the 2006 award for best Media Campaign from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations.

Most recently, I was hired to direct communications efforts for the 2011 Ohio China Business Summit hosted by the State Dept. of Development and Governor John Kasich at The Ohio State University.  In four days, we recruited NBC TV coverage, prepared senior state and corporate leaders for talking points with media, and created a commemorative booklet.

During all of these success stories as Director of PR & Marketing, positive results were guaranteed, including rapidly rising retention, enrollment, graduation and fund raising rates … all hinged to brand and image adjustments among key stakeholders, media, customers and other decision makers.
